Origin & Growth

Vel Tech, “A Place to Progress and Prosper”, was born as an Engineering college in 1997 under the Trust founded by the Educational-Philanthropic Personalities- Dr.R.Rangarajan and Dr.Sagunthala Rangarajan, who are the Founder President and Foundress respectively now. At the time of inception it offered three Under Graduate programs namely B.E – Computer Science and Engineering, B.E-Electronics and Communication Engineering and B.E-Electrical and Electronics Engineering with the initial intake of 60 in each programme. Initially, the college was affiliated to Madras University and approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and then affiliated to Anna University, Chennai in 2001.

This “Temple of Learning”, Vel Tech, has grown steadily over the years by the uncompromising vision, leadership and guidance of these founder couple and matured as Vel Tech University u/s 3 of UGC Act, 1956 in 2008 with the clear vision “To create, translate and share frontiers of knowledge embedded with wisdom and innovation for a positive transformation of emerging society”. Since then it has been sprawling its wings not only in horizontal and vertical but also in all dimensions with the following missions: To nurture excellence in teaching and learning, incubate enquiry driven creativity, foster multidisciplinary research, instill integrity and honour; inculcate scholarly leadership towards global competence and growth beyond self in a serene, inclusive and free academic environment.

Presently the university “The paradise for Learners & Inventers” has been marching towards its goal by achieving all-round excellence., with the highly professional services of our honorable Chancellor Dr.R.P.Bajpai, and the phenomenal guidance and meticulous execution of our Vice Chancellor Prof. Beela Satyanarayana and the able administration of the Registrar Dr. E.Kannan.

A committed group of well qualified faculty members has been striving hard under the decade-long experienced academic administrators like Directors, Deans, and Heads etc., to achieve the vision of the university through concurrent achievement of the mission. The University offers 9 Under Graduate and 13 Post Graduate programmes in Engineering and technology, Science and Management Studies. All the departments offer Doctoral programmes. Till April 2015, the programmes offered are under semester based credit system with some flexibility in choosing the Elective courses in the higher semesters. But from this academic year (2015-16) onwards, all the programmes will follow the Choice Based Credit System(CBCS) with 6 degree choices like (i) Course Choice within the program (ii) Semester Choice (iii) Faculty Choice (iv) Inter-program / Department / School level course choice (v) Inter-Institute level course choice and (vi) MOOC course choice. Since 2012, all the programmes have been following Outcome Based Education (OBE), which primarily focuses on knowledge, skill and attitude of the graduates. As curriculum and detailed syllabi are the pivotal components of the educational process, all the programmes design their curriculum by inviting relevant stakeholders from industries, academia, research organizations etc., The curriculum and syllabi certainly fulfill the guidelines stipulated by the regulatory bodies and the standards specified by the respective international professional societies such as IEEE, ISA, ASME, ASCE, ACM etc.,

While designing the course, student learning outcome, so called course outcomes are written for each course (theory / practical and project work) in the program curriculum. Faculty members deliver the course using suggestive instructional methods in order to attain the course outcomes. Continuous assessment and evaluation methods such as tests, assignments, seminar, course end survey etc., are employed to measure the attainment of each course outcome. For each program, the educational objectives, which portray the professional and carrier accomplishments of the graduates within few years of graduation, are articulated through well defined procedure which involves programme stake holders. An utmost care was taken to keep the program educational objectives in-line with the vision and mission of the department concerned.

Similarly, program outcomes i.e., the qualities, in terms of knowledge, skill and attitude, which are expected from the graduates by the time of graduation, are derived from the graduate attributes of Washington accord. The attainment of program outcomes is measured through the attainment of contributing course outcomes and indirect tools such as program exit survey, student recruiter survey etc. Similarly the attainment of program educational objective is measured after three to four years of graduation using alumni survey, employer survey, customer survey etc. The attainments of program educational objectives and program outcomes are analysed and corrective measures are taken to bring the continuous improvement in the programme concerned. The corrective measures shall include curriculum design, teaching-learning process and assessment and evaluation.

Governance has become a major leverage tool for improving quality in all aspects of higher education. Most governance arrangements are advisory in nature, which allow the institution to use them in its own way. The financial delegation of authority was framed as a bye law as per the provisions of the Memorandum of Association of the University. The university adheres to the Memorandum of Association (MoA) as given by UGC and the MoA amended as per UGC updates (regulation 2010, 2014 and 2015). The financial delegation of authority is a powerful mechanism available to monitor the effective and efficient use of financial resource. All purchases must be approved only if provided explicitly in the budget approved by the Finance committee. Our university adopted the ICAI standards of accounting as soon as UGC announced the use of these standards for educational institutions. Our university went one step further and made codes for each nature of expenditure ensuring complete transparency right from budgeting, incurring of expenditure, monthly expenditure reviews and budget utilization upto finalization of external audited balance sheet. The governance in our university is good and it is governed by top management which is compact and highly professional. The Vice Chancellor is the Supreme authority and Chairman of all statutory boards which are constituted as per UGC guidelines. The administrative process of the University is fully transparent, which enables the administrators to work with motivation for the benefit of the institution. The university is working towards maximizing the impact of the partnership with Industries and International organizations, which help faculty and student exchange, semester abroad programme, internship at abroad universities. Our university governance is sensitive to changing educational, social and market demand, promoting an ambiance of creativity innovation and improving academic and research quality as well as inclusive practices for social justice and better stakeholder relationships.

Innovations and best practices add more and more feathers to the cap of the university. The E-waste management unit in the university, costing around rupees one crore, handles wastes such as computers, UPS, printing systems etc. The following are the select innovations introduced during the last four years which have created a positive impact on the functioning of the university. Outcome Based Education-Blooms Taxonomy, Choice Based Credit systems, International Internships, Student exchange programme with internationally-reputed universities, Numerous Industry-University Interactions/Partnership/colorations, more sponsored research projects, university knowledge resource centre, Centre for women Empowerment etc. Though quite-a-few good practices are founded, implemented and followed in the university, the following three are identified as that best practices (i) Industry-University Interaction/Partnership/Collaboration, (ii) International collaboration and (iii) Outcome Based Education.
